Hassen Ibn Nooman was repelled by the Kahina who ruled over Ifriqiya for five years. It was after the reoccupation of Carthage by the Byzantines that the Caliph Abd Al-Malik provided him with supporting forces that allowed him to reconquer Ifriqiya in 698 AD and establish a naval base between Tunis and Radès. The Zenata cavalry of the Kahina joined the Arabs after the defeat of their queen. Around 705 AD, Hassen was replaced by Musa Ibn Nusayr. No longer dependent on Egypt, this governor extended Umayyad power over the Maghreb and then into Andalusia, thanks to the Berber contingents led by his lieutenant Tarik Ibn Ziad in 711 AD. After the downfall of the Nusayrid clan, the new governors sent by Damascus had antagonistic policies towards the Berbers.
