On Jan 14, 2020, friends of Lina gather at the premises of ATFD (Tunisian Association of Democratic Women) to pay her one last tribute, knowing that she does not have long left to live.

After a period of prolonged illness, Lina passed away on January 27, 2020 - her own account of January 14 passing away along with her.

In this special episode, her father Sadok Ben Mhenni (a left-wing activist), her friends, the bloggers and activists Hana Trabelsi, Faten Abdelkefi and Haythem El Mekki, recount Lina's commitment, her struggles before and after the revolution, and her relationship to the illness that ultimately took her life.

Henda Chennaoui and Mariem Mcheti bring some of Lina's own intimate texts to life through reading them aloud.

Her family and friends describe the impact that Lina's photos and videos had through documenting and publicising the violations of Ben Ali's dictatorship and other events during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary periods.

Through the multiple testimonies, this episode pieces together and pays tribute to the life of a ' Tunisian girl'.

Where were you on January 14th ?

Throughout the year leading up to the tenth anniversary of the revolution, Inkyfada looks back on the events of January 14, 2011 in Tunis. Through the personal accounts of individuals on the ground, an alternative documentation of contemporary history is formed: one that is based on several different perspectives.

Latest episodes

A Bullet Straight to the Heart

Throughout the previous episodes, the arrival of Helmi’s funeral procession on Avenue Habib Bourguiba often resurfaces. Ten years later, the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The testimonies of his relatives, interspersed with excerpts from previous episodes, make it possible to reconstruct part of the story: that of a young man and a dictator with interlinked destinies.

A Child's Gaze

January 14th, 2011. Saïf, 12, goes with his* mother to the Avenue. Until the following morning, he would experience things that would mark him for life. Saïf's account of January 14th adds new insight from a child’s perspective. With a great deal of self-distance, ease and tenderness, Saïf recounts his strained yet tender relationship with a mother who ultimately taught him the true meaning of the word "freedom".

Emergency Exit

January 14th, 2011. Alaeddine Slim goes to the avenue to demonstrate. He won't be going home until the next day, after an entire night of unthinkable ordeals. Ala recalls how his office became a place of refuge for 57 people, and how in the middle of the night, some of them had ended up in the Ministry of the Interior, which was being used as a makeshift detention centre.
